Nate__ArnieNate & Arnie

Arnie is a retired orthodontist from Northampton, and found he really missed his connections with kids after he stopped working. So he became a Big to Nathaniel.

Arnie describes what he loves about the connection with Nathaniel:

“Number one, he’s enthusiastic about everything we do together, which has ranged from bird watching to swimming. Number two, his manners. I wish I had manners like he does. Every time we go out for lunch or do something, everything receives a thank you. Number three, he’s polite but really seems interested and wants to succeed in what we do together. Number four, since he is Hispanic, I’ve learned more about the Hispanic culture. It’s been a learning experience for me. I’m very lucky to have met someone like him.”

Arnie’s experience with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampden County has been positive all around too. “I felt (the staff) are truly interested in finding positive people, and the follow up since then has been great. The agency is well run.”

Little Brother Nate, 11, says he was looking for a Big so he could have someone else in his life to look up to. About Arnie, he says, “He’s a very fun and nice man. He does homework with me and takes me to many kinds of sports games. Arnie and I like each other a lot and enjoy the same activities. My Big Brother helps me with my self-esteem and makes me feel confident with myself.”

The sixth grader will put that confidence and self-esteem to good use in the future, as he plans to become a Marine when he grows up. He is off to a great start!
