Internship Opportunities

Interns are a vital part of Big Brothers Big Sisters—and will gain real world experience from the start. Each internship includes components such as professionalism, critical thinking, and verbal and written communications. In addition to building skill sets to support an area of personal or professional interest, each position is created to further prepare the student for the workplace.

Advocacy Intern  [+]

Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks an intern to help create and implement an advocacy campaign that will increase awareness of the positive impact youth mentoring has on our community. The intern will gain knowledge and professional skills by working side by side with the Director of Development & Marketing. 

The goal of the internship is to work closely with the development director to engage our constituents, in particular our Bigs & Littles, in public policy initiatives specifically around the need for  youth mentoring. We hope to provide youth in our program with the tools to empower themselves and their peers, educate them on the power of youth-adult relationships in school settings, and learn how advocacy is a an effective tool. 

Desired qualifications are:

  • Availability a minimum of 5 hours per week during semester. 
  • Detail oriented; organized; good time management skills.
  • Experience writing Blogs or content generation.
  • Strong customer-service skills and professionalism with the public.
  • Strong writing skills for different audiences.
  • Recommended Applicable Majors –Marketing, Communications, Nonprofit Management, Education, Political Science, etc.
    Compensation: Unpaid. If applicable, experience can be used for credit in internship course.

Additional: This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into the not-for-profit sector. You will work in a “hands-on” environment with individuals who respond daily to critical community issues. This is also a great chance to develop above-entry-level skills.

Communications Intern [+]

Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks an intern to help increase awareness of the need for youth mentoring in our community through story telling. The intern will gain knowledge and professional skills by working side by side with the Director of Development & Marketing. 

The BBBS Communications Internship experience includes a variety of opportunities to gain knowledge on several facets of communications within a non-profit organization.

Responsibilities include:

  • Generating blog posts for newly created Blog and other content and creative as needed
  • Interviewing local Big Brothers/Sisters, Little Brothers/Sisters, and family members in the program for potential stories to be used in newsletters, annual reports, online, etc. 
  • Assisting in managing and maintaining blog and social media content calendar
  • Local media pitching
  • Participating in discussions around marketing communications and strategies

Desired qualifications are:

  • Detail oriented; organized; good time management skills.
  • Experience writing Blogs or content generation.
  • Strong customer-service skills and professionalism with the public.
  • Strong writing skills for different audiences.

Digital Media Intern [+]

Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks an intern to help increase awareness of the need for youth mentoring in our community through digital media marketing. The intern will gain knowledge and professional skills working side by side with the Director of Development & Marketing. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Building and updating web pages and email campaigns
  • Writing and procuring content for Big Brothers Big Sisters social media channels
  • Researching content and producing digital marketing materials 
  • Improving our search engine optimization (SEO) efforts through our content management system
  • Procuring and producing visual assets for various projects
  • Observing the digital marketing practices of other organizations to help create best practices
  • Reviewing our digital analytics and assist in tracking and report production
  • Auditing and cleaning up our content management system
  • Conducting online research for special projects
  • Day-to-day department operations

Desired qualifications are:

Flexible schedule with a minimum of 5 hours per week during semester 
Detail oriented; organized; good time management skills.
Experience writing Blogs or content generation.
Strong customer-service skills and professionalism with the public.

Special Events & Fundraising Intern [+]

The region's largest mentoring agency – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampden County – seeks interns to work with a dynamic fundraising team, in a fast-paced environment. Interns will gain learning, knowledge and professional skills experience by working with the Director of Development with activities and projects that help to raise funds through special events, individual and foundation giving.

The BBBS internship experience includes a variety of opportunities to gain knowledge of nonprofit fundraising and stewardship. Interns learn about and work with our staff in areas such as:

  • Prospect research
  • Contributing to donor cultivation and stewardship plans
  • Learning donor database skills
  • Assisting with donor communications via web tools and acknowledgements
  • Supporting special event implementation
  • Interaction with vendors and volunteers

Desired qualifications are:

  • Availability to work  agreed upon hours per week during semester. May include some evenings and weekends. Could also be a year long internship.
  • Detail oriented; organized; good time management skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (excel, powerpoint, etc.) and social media resources (Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
  • Strong customer-service skills and professionalism with the public.
  • Sound writing and business communication skills.

Recommended Applicable Majors – Communications, Marketing, Business, Nonprofit Management
